This primate sanctuary takes in rescued animals and runs a number of local programs designed to educate and support the local community. In addition to the daily tours to visit the local animals indigenous to the Yucatan, a souvenir shop offers handmade indigenous crafts supporting the indigenous Maya community.

Akumal Monkey Sanctuary & Rescued Animals has a number of local programs. One educates rural and local students about the flora, fauna, and animal conservation. Another rehabilitates and releases any animals that qualify through its reintroduction program.

Funding this important conservation and education work, the Sanctuary runs daily tours of the facility and offers animal interactions. Visitors can learn from primates through an educational interaction allowing up close and personal ability to touch and even feed seeds or fruits to some of the animals. This is a great family-friendly activity for anyone touring the Yucatan and Riviera Maya an in search of a fun and educational activity.

The Akumal Sanctuary Tour includes:

  • A guided tour of AMS and its habitats.
  • Interaction with a troop of primates (15-20 min).
  • Visit an underground river (cenote).

Tours generally start on the hour from 10am to 4pm and last 2.5 hours.
