Blue Ventures Timor-Leste

Atauro Island, Timor-Leste

Blue Ventures offers marine conservation expeditions in Timor-Leste to survey marine habitats and collect critical marine inventory data alongside marine scientists. As one of the organization’s newer bases, there the data will shape all future projects here. These expeditions operate like a cross between a tour, a citizen science trip, and a volunteer experience. Expeditions vary in length, with some running for around two weeks, and other programs requiring travelers to spend an average of six weeks, depending on the project.

Expeditions are based on Atauro Island, which lies across the Wetar Strait, 25 km from Timor-Leste’s capital Dili. The island is surrounded by a fringing reef that drops off sharply to the open ocean only a few metres away from shore and has some of the most breathtaking scuba diving on offer anywhere in the world.

Expedition volunteers stay at a local homestay for the first weeks of their stay. This homestay ensures that money from the program stays in local communities and positively impact the lives of those in the marine fishing communities—the organization spends 96% of all volunteer fees on the marine conservation projects.

Because of the volunteering aspect, and the remote location of some dive sites, volunteers can stay between three and 18 weeks with a regular stay of six weeks. Fees for a six weeks expedition as qualified diver start at £2600 including transport, training, meals, accommodation, and two dives a day, five days a week. Shorter tour programs, naturally, cost less.

Two ways to support this social enterprise:

Explore Timor-Leste in 2 Weeks: On this exclusive adventure you’ll dive and snorkel in the turquoise waters of the world’s most biodiverse oceans, exploring vibrant coral reefs and unspoiled beaches, experiencing the culture and surrounding landscapes of this beautiful country all while contributing to community led marine conservation in a global biodiversity hotspot.

Timor-Leste Marine Conservation Expeditions: Join long-term marine conservation efforts that will inform Blue Ventures’ theory and practice and directly contribute to its efforts to develop new approaches to engaging Timor-Leste’s coastal communities in marine conservation. The long-term expeditions offer an incredible chance to take part in cultural exchange sessions and also receive science training in order to be fully prepared for the underwater surveys taking place at the dive camp. Participants undertake two dives a day, five days a week.
