Lake Atitlan, Guatemala
Comedor Konojel provides tasty traditional Guatemalan food made by the local community. This nonprofit funnels all money back into local community development programs—many meant to feed the most at-risk individuals. In addition to addressing food security, Konojel programs train women and young people in food services, and provide them with a meaningful path toward work. Eat a meal at Konojel and you’re providing one for a local, too!
The restaurant serves high-quality (vegetarian-friendly) food at great prices and prepared by local members of the San Marcos community. At the restaurant, also consider buying souvenirs from the women’s cooperative, which creates handmade goods from recycled fabrics, solar-baked cookies, and dehydrated snack products.
This grassroots organization has been growing steadily since 2011. Konojel’s programs are run by indigenous managers, with administrative assistance from others. The organization’s mission is to reduce chronic malnutrition and endemic poverty in San Marcos by providing programs through which at-risk individuals can raise their standard of living.
At its core, Konojel is fighting the root causes of poverty and malnutrition by creating sustainable, dignified work for women, educational support for young people, and by directly feeding the most malnourished and at risk community members: including new mothers, pregnant women, the elderly, and elementary school kids.
