Expediciones Sierra Norte
Pueblos Mancomunados is a community organization in the Oaxaca Valley that integrates the first hiking and mountain biking trails designed to show visitors the most relevant aspects of this important natural site. Local communities are involved in every development stage of the project and it’s a stand-out example of the best parts of community-based tourism, as well as stand-out example of indigenous-led tourism.
This business offers travelers a unique experience in a close contact with nature and the culture of the Zapotec communities located between 2.000 and 3.200 meters of altitude. You can walk more than 100 kilometers of rural trails designed especially for hiking, mountain biking and horseback riding. The accommodation in these towns is basic but well appointed and your guides offer a window into the local culture.
Expediciones Sierra Norte was created with four fundamental objectives:
- Increase the community members’ capacity to protect and sustainably manage their natural heritage.
- Develop a responsible tourism activity in the territory of Pueblos Mancomunados that would allow visitors to be in contact with the indigenous culture and nature, in a fun, safe and educational way.
- Generate employment opportunities for community members.
- Serve as a model for establishment of similar programs in different indigenous communities in Mexico and outside of it.
If visiting them in person, the business is called “Operadora Turistica Pueblos Mancomunados” on the signs. It’s very near to the zócalo and places you’ll be visiting, so it’s easy to stop in and talk about the tours on offer.
