Reality Tours and Travel

Mumbai & Delhi, India

Offering slum tours in Mumbai, as well as guided tours around the city, Reality Tours and Travel provides authentic and thought-provoking local experiences through tours and uses the profits to create change in the local communities. The organization began working in the Dharavi slum and has built a strong community there that receives tourists and benefits from every tour.

Slum tours are not always a positive aspect of tourism—they can be done wrong. Reality Travel and Tours has all the hallmarks of an organization approaching slum tourism with the right policies in place. Co-founded by a local from Mumbai, the organization hires locals to run all of the tours. The affiliated NGO uses funds from responsible tourists to plan and execute education and social programs in the areas visited by tours.

The organization believes that tourism can and should be a force for local development. Reality Tours is a social business that uses a profit sharing model to fund its sister-NGO Reality Gives. Eighty percent of post-tax profits go directly to Reality Gives, which runs high quality education programs in areas where Reality Tours works.

When taking any of the slum tours, understand that the approach and attitude of the tourists themselves go a long way toward making the tour respectful to the locals. Read this piece, Perspectives on Poverty, for a look at the potential harm in treating a slum tour as an opportunity to do little more than photograph the slums, rather than learn from and connect with the locals.
