Akili Preparatory School is located in the Obunga Slums in Kisumu City, Kenya. The school provides a quality education to vulnerable and underprivileged girls from the local community. The school helps single mothers provide schooling for their daughters, and also supports vocational training and skills training in the community. The founders hope to use Akili Preparatory School as a model for the provision of sustainable high quality education for girls which can be rolled-out to other schools to help improve student performance and achieve gender equality and empower women in Kenya.
Volunteers are needed to support the school and volunteer fees also help pay student sponsorship fees. Volunteers assist teachers in the classroom, help teachers develop and implement lesson plans, lead classes and recess, among other areas.
The school also operates a Library & Information Technology Center throughout the year and uses volunteers to teach students basic computing, to improve literacy, and tutor students.
Skilled teachers and educators are also encouraged to work with the school to offer skills training workshops and professional development classes for the school’s staff.
Please contact the school directly to discuss volunteering with the Akili Girls Preparatory School.
All volunteers working with children should consider dedicating at least four weeks to their placement to ensure maximum benefit to the community where you’re working.
All volunteers pay a one-time fee of $200 to support training the volunteer and support the school. Affordable volunteer housing is available nearby for a small fee.
