The first Alice Project school launched in 1994 and since then the schools have grown throughout central India, educating some of the poorest communities in the country. There are several Alice schools and as funds are raised more schools are built to serve poor communities and to give street kids an education.
Volunteers and visitors are welcome at Alice Project Schools. Long-term volunteers are encouraged because they can develop projects or skills with children, teachers and staff. Past and present volunteers with Alice Project Schools have taught yoga, meditation, martial arts, English, maths, environmental issues, music, arts, educational games and sports, cooking & baking, handicraft. Other volunteers have helped design new buildings, with masonry works, painting, etc. The organization is very open to new ideas and contributions.
With prior arrangement and approval families can volunteer as long as there is at least one adult present with any minors.
In addition to volunteers, visitors are welcome to tour the Alice Project schools and learn more about the method — contact in advance to schedule these brief visits.
There is no specific minimum, though long-term volunteers are encouraged so they can initiate and complete projects. Keep in mind, all GV volunteers working with children are encouraged to stay for two weeks minimum.
Volunteering is free though accommodation is not included but can be arranged for very reasonable fees (typically less than US $100 per month).
