Honduras Child Alliance is a volunteer based group working collectively with Honduran community members to improve the lives and opportunities of children in Honduras through education and health programs in El Porvenir, Atlántida.
The Honduras Child Alliance provides educational enrichment and healthy living programs for children and teens in the north-coast beach community of El Porvenir. Programs include: English & Spanish literacy, computers, arts, intro to science, sports and fitness, group skills/conflict resolution, and more! These projects were initiated in response to our awareness that the cycle of poverty is perpetuated through lack of education. The combined energy of international volunteers, managers, and directors blends a unique and effective set of skills to support educational and humanitarian projects which target that cycle. As the Alliance collaborates to develop opportunities for children in El Porvenir, it welcome volunteers, sponsors, and cooperation with like-minded organizations.
Volunteer Roles with Honduras Child Alliance
Volunteers will work within the community in a variety of roles within the core programs:
Porvenir English Program “Plus”
The main program is PEP+ (Porvenir English Program “plus”). This educational enrichment program offers free English instruction for children, teens and adults along with literacy immersion in both Spanish and English. It additionally includes art, music, science, and sport activities. Laptop computers and Kindles are used for some activities so that students gain skills with technology. These programs operate from February through November.
Vacation Activities Program (VAP)
The Vacation Activities Program (VAP) operates during the school break of November, December and January. VAP is a volunteer-powered ‘summer camp’ style enrichment program that helps reinforce academic skills in a fun and experiential setting.
Healthy Snacks Program
Many children in the program experience food insecurity and arrive to class hungry. The Healthy Snacks Program provides a daily, protein filled snack to each child. Snacks are designed to model healthy and locally available food choices.
English instruction for children attending the public kinder.
Supplemental to PEP+, English Club is an immersive English class for older students who demonstrate a strong desire to practice speaking, reading, and writing English.
PEP-Adultos & Study-Buddies
English instruction for adults, and a program where adults from the English classes tutor international volunteers in conversational Spanish and then the volunteers tutor in English. This give and take benefits everyone and builds lasting skills and friendships!
HCA’s primary focus is educational enrichment and it provides free English as a Second Language and Spanish Literacy lessons to local children as well as running a Vacation Acitivies Program (Nov-Jan). There is also the opportunity to assist Kinder-Year 1 children at a bilingual school in a nearby town called La Unión and to fundraise and build bathrooms for the families that need them most in El Porvenir.
Who Can Volunteer with HCA?
All ages (though preferably 20+) are welcome. The main focus of the volunteering is teaching English as a foreign language and teaching Spanish Literacy (Reading Club) to children from Kinder to approx. 13 years old. There are also opportunities to teach Adults. Creative activities (arts & crafts etc) and sport are also encouraged, especially Nov-Jan in the Vacation Activities Program. Speaking Spanish is not a pre-requisite, nor is teaching experience, though both are helpful! A positive mental attitude, dedication and enthusiasm are the most important qualities for volunteers to have.
There are also construction opportunities (see Building Baños on the project section of our website) as well as opportunities for Dentists and Hygienists, and trained healthcare professionals.
The minimum preferred commitment is 6 weeks. For bathroom building and dental programs 6+ months is ideal.
Clean, comfortable, secure housing is available for $5-6 USD per day depending on length of stay. Some private rooms are available at a higher cost. Volunteer houses have full kitchens so volunteers are able to purchase and prepare their own food. Most volunteers report spending about HNL 600 (about $27 USD) per week for food. Markets are within close walking distance to the volunteer houses, as are some lovely and economical beachfront restaurants.
