La Esperanza Granada is a volunteer group focused on children’s education. The organization reaches more than 2,000 children in poverty-stricken areas, and focuses on trying to help in non-invasive ways by working directly with local schools, teachers, and parents to meet educational needs. Programs run in the school system and involve assisting teachers, tutoring small children, running sports programs, teaching English, and stimulating an interest in learning.
Volunteers are requested to have an intermediate grasp of the Spanish language, or better. Those with only beginners-level Spanish may be able to volunteer if they commit for an extended period of time.
The organization prefers that all volunteers commit to at least four weeks, and encourages a longer stay for the benefit of both volunteers and the children with whom they will be working. GV supports a minimum time commitment when working with children.
There are technically no fees associated with volunteering, but volunteers are asked to make a $20 donation to administrative costs. Volunteers are also asked to purchase a La Esperanza Granada t-shirt for $5.20. Volunteer housing is available through the organization and can be rented by either single or shared rooms.
