Libros Para Pueblos works with rural communities in Oaxaca State to found a library and provide reading material. The organization works on a model of co-investment — the towns must help fund the library and provide support for the programs. Volunteer needs change, but most of the work is about literacy, books, and organizing the various parts of the organization.
The organization works within 70 communities in and around Oaxaca City. In addition to founding new libraries, the organization provides support and guidance to its libraries through a network of mexican Regional Coordinators who offer one‐on‐one advice to the librarians. An annual statewide conference and regional workshops helps librarians to build their skills and to learn from each other.
This is a great volunteering opportunity for librarians with an interest in sharing that knowledge and working within literacy and education. Any volunteers working out in the communities must speak Spanish. But there are often opportunities at the offices in Oaxaca Centro as well, so you should reach out an enquire about the organization’s current needs.
