The Light and Leadership Initiative works with the community of Huaycan to bring quality education and empowerment to women and children in the area. The organization was founded in 2008, and has continued to grow in the community-reaching more children, empowering more women, and continuing to spread a love of reading and learning in several classrooms across Huaycan.

The Light and Leadership works in many different ways to achieve their goal. They offer classes in English, reading, math, chess, sports, and art to children from ages 7-12. These classes are supplementary to the kids’ everyday schoolwork, which is far below the standard of a ""good education"" in many parts of the world. Additionally, the classes help kids to learn the value of education and the importance of community. Once kids reach age 13, they can participate in continued classes in the teen center. The teen center, aside from providing classes in subjects such as English and computer literacy, is a safe and caring environment for youths who grow up facing many challenges.

The other key part of LLI’s mission is its Women’s Empowerment Program. Through classes and workshops, the program helps women develop skills to become successful at home and in the workplace. Women become more empowered to act within the community, and to push for a better education for their children.

Volunteers are an integral part of the organization. From teaching classes, to running programs, to organizing future volunteers, volunteers have a variety of roles and responsibilities, allowing them to make a real impact in the community. The Light and Leadership Initiative is always looking for driven and ambitious volunteers.

Typically, each volunteer receives a primary placement (20-30 hours/week) and one or two secondary placements (5-10 hours/week). In addition to any contact hours with the community, volunteers often participate program development projects and monthly meetings, making their impact last well beyond their time with LLI.
