Located near the Thai-Burma border, MEF is an English-immersion program catering to Burmese students between the ages of 17 and 23. MEF aims to support disadvantaged youth from Burma and along its borders who are unable to attain further education, in the hope they will return to their communities, to contribute to efforts of development and positive change for Burma.
In order to accomplish this goal, students are prepared to take the high school equivalency test. An accredited certificate is necessary for those students who wish to attend university, as it not only provides students with the relevant skills needed for higher education, but also the certificate needed to enter university. The program also prepares them to keep up with the modern ways of life and demands of universities abroad.
The organization’s need are often seasonally specific, so please check their blog and their site for specifics on the type of teachers and coordinators they need.
MEF prefers teaching volunteers to commit for a minimum of six months, both to minimize class disruption and to provide continuity of interaction for the students. Teaching volunteers with a strong desire to work with MEF who cannot commit to a six-month stint should contact the organization to see if arrangements can be worked out. Administrative and office volunteer positions are also available.
There are no fees associated with volunteering with this organization.
