Phuket Has Been Good To Us is a charity based in Kamala, Phuket that aims to improve the lives of Thai youth, helping them become capable and confident English speakers so they can secure well paid employment.

PHBGTU provides free English lessons at two government schools in Kamala and Kalim, teaching more than 900 children who would not otherwise have the opportunity to learn from a fluent English-speaking teacher. The Foundation also runs an outside school hours programme for residential students, called Coconut Club, which is enthusiastically attended. Often these children are living at school as they have no family to care for them and this programme may be the only opportunity they have to leave the school grounds.

The organization was founded in 2005 by a local ex-pat restaurateur in the wake of the 2004 tsunami disaster, which completely destroyed both government schools in Kamala and Kalim. He worked with the Headmaster of the Kalim school to use additional relief funding to implement a long-term, sustainable English language education programme at the school. Since the tourism industry is such an integral part of the economy in Thailand, particularly in Phuket, speaking English is incredibly important to many Thai people’s employment prospects and quality of life.

Continuing the founder’s vision for quality English language education for Thai youth, Phuket Has Been Good to Us is now a registered Thai charity that employs up to six fluent English speaking teachers in two government schools in Phuket, with future aspirations to expand throughout the island. The charity receives no government funding and relies on volunteer work in the classrooms (teaching fellow, classroom assistant, reading group leader), Coconut Club, and office (general volunteers and office fellows/interns to assist with fundraising and outreach).
