Shikshangram is a shelter for currently 110 homeless children – about 40% are orphans the rest come from either single parent or a place where they cannot be cared for adequately. SG is a shelter that is run by a young Indian couple who were in care themselves, and have a big vision.
The organization runs a a voluntourism program allowing volunteers to teach english or computer skills, assist with organic gardening projects, write fundraising proposals, assist with organization of annual summer camp, as well as plumbing, carpentry, and building.
Minimum of one month, though longer-term stays are preferred. GV encourages all volunteers working with children to devote as long as possible to the volunteer project to maximize the positive impact.
Shorter-term volunteers are asked to donate $100-$150 per week to cover basic costs including full board. Fees are waived for long term volunteer stays.
