The Red Road Foundation is a non-profit NGO that currently has a community development project in rural Cambodia. The vision of the Foundation is to create a communal environment and sanctuary within the village where trade skills and education are shared among local people and children.
Currently the project provides education through trade classes, workshops, and supplemental English and Khmer education for those not able to attend school. Some of the community workshops include leadership coaching, science, art, music, environmental science, health, hygiene, nutrition, sports, and more. The school is also built in an earth ship design that utilizes waste materials to help the community learn sustainability and keep the village free from excess rubbish.
Apart from educational opportunities, volunteers can also assist in community projects such as:
- Farming duties that help sustain the financial needs of the school, like tending to sugarcane, moringa and other plants
- Producing recycled glass to support additional revenue creation for the school and community.
- Sustainable building of the volunteer and community accommodation. This includes innovating on current structures or finding new building projects that can be completed.
While there are various projects underway, volunteers are given freedom to find additional projects within the area that they can support.
Volunteers work about six hours during weekend classes. During weekdays volunteers spend about five hours a day working and are encouraged to take a day off per week to explore the surrounding area.
While this program only requires a 2 week commitment, all volunteers interact with children throughout the week and teach on weekends. GV strongly recommends that volunteers on this project commit to a minimum of one month – longer stays better support the development and welfare of young children.
While no fees are charged for volunteering, food must be purchased off-site and cooked at the volunteer accommodation. <!--more-->
There is a village stall nearby for basics, but volunteers are encouraged to bring most essentials with them. There is also the option to eat with a Cambodian family for $2 USD per meal. To access the location volunteers should be comfortable renting and ensuring they have petrol for their motorbike, as the location is inaccessible without it.
