Outside Antigua, Guatemala
Long Way Home is working to build self-sustainable schools that focus on promoting education, employment, and the environment. They are currently building a school in rural Guatemala that is functioning as a primary school; and as they continue building they need construction and education volunteers.
Matungu is a community-based organization working in rural Kenya that aims to build the capacity for youth and women, mostly in farming. The organization works closely with five groups comprising of at least 150 community members. Volunteers help with the organization’s core programs, themed around: Agriculture/Environment, Education, and Business Skills.
Maya Universe Academy is the first community-run private school in Nepal. The school runs on a unique system of payment where instead of money, families “pay” for their children’s schooling by working two days a month at Maya’s farm. In a country where public schools provide abysmal educations and many cannot afford private schools, the organization allows children from poor families the opportunity to receive the quality education they deserve.
Mi Casa en Ipauratu is a small foundation that tries to improve the lives of the people in the rural area where they are situated. They run different programs including: a small school for children with special needs (down, autism etc.), a preschool for children who can´t afford a kindergarten, an afternoon program for local youth to learn English and leadership skills, and an entertainment program for elderly.
New Horizons is a private, non-profit organization associated with neither political nor religious activities. Their objective is to initiate and coordinate the support and help of national and foreign volunteers in different associations, organizations and communities which need help to carry out their activities. New Horizons helps with different projects within a range of fields, including: social work, cultural development, education, community work and small enterprises development.
Pochutla, Oaxaca State, Mexico
Pina Palmera has spent more than 30 years bringing human rights to disabled persons from rural communities. They work within a majority of indigenous communities and with people of all ages. They are located on the southern coast of Oaxaca State in San Pedro Pochutla. They offer rehabilitation processes, social inclusion, information, education and awareness workshops. Volunteers are needed to help run all aspects of the organization, as well in specialized areas of physical therapy and rehabilitation.
Nicaragua, Central America
Project Bona Fide is a non-profit organization and demonstrative permaculture farm working toward sustaining culture through organic agriculture, community correlated outreach, and re-forestation projects in Nicaragua. PBF utilizes permaculture design, agroforestry, research & education, and community collaboration to promote food security on Isla de Ometepe.
Oaxaca City, Mexico
Despite food shortages and food scarcity, Oaxaca state is suffering from an obesity epidemic. Puente uses the small-scale production of amaranth with agro-ecological methods to offer farmer families nutritional, environmental, and economic benefits. By increasing nutrition education and access to healthy, local foods, marginalized farmer families improve nutrition and health. And with the sale of these crops, the families also receive economic benefit.
Punta Gorda, Belize
Volunteering is within Marine Conservation. This project is for divers, non-divers, scientists and non-scientists alike. The PADI Open Water course is included in the price so even complete beginners can join. The company’s current primary objective is for the Belizean Government to enforce preservation zones in the Sapodilla Cayes Marine Park (SCMR).
