Despite food shortages and food scarcity, Oaxaca state is suffering from an obesity epidemic. Puente uses the small-scale production of amaranth with agro-ecological methods to offer farmer families nutritional, environmental, and economic benefits. By increasing nutrition education and access to healthy, local foods, marginalized farmer families improve nutrition and health. And with the sale of these crops, the families also receive economic benefit.
Puente a la Salud Comunitaria contributes to food sovereignty and advances the health and well-being of rural communities in Mexico by promoting the cultivation, consumption and commercialization of amaranth.
Volunteers are able to work within a range of areas, including nutrition education, sustainability cataloging, information technology and a range of other areas. Research directly with the organization to assess which positions fit your skills.
