Volunteering is within Marine Conservation. This project is for divers, non-divers, scientists and non-scientists alike. The PADI Open Water course is included in the price so even complete beginners can join. The company’s current primary objective is for the Belizean Government to enforce preservation zones in the Sapodilla Cayes Marine Park (SCMR).
The main places in need of protection are the fish spawning aggregation areas and conch and lobster breeding and migratory areas. The main focus is to understand the complex eco-system of the SCMR in order to maximize our conservation efforts.
Volunteer help ranges depending upon what each individual wishes to get out of the trip, together with the length of stay and diving ability. The organization though, on all trips, emphasis learning and understanding the underwater environment and systems. This company’s projects fall much more within the realms of voluntourism since the fees are high, you get to explore the reefs, and your short-term help is assisting the organization’s long-term efforts.
